John from Australia shares with us his Ikea hack, put together as Christmas presents this year.

He says, "I decided to purchase two cheap 7" digital photo frames on sale from K-Mart for $30.00 AUD and mount them in Ribba frames.

The larger frame is the 30 cm x 40 cm Ribba ($20.00 AUD). Since the window cut out of the mat board that comes with the frame is larger than the LCD, I had to get a mat board cut to size with a window that matched the size of the frame, this cost me another $20.00 AUD. I simply removed the clear plastic frame from the digital photo frame before mounting the LCD inside the mat board. Total cost was $70.00 AUD.

I used a Rattvik white wine glass, faux gold leaf, decoupaged images I made using digital collage of copyright-free clip art, resin and faux rhinestones to make this pimp chalice for my man for Christmas. I was my first attempt at doing any of these things on glass and my first use of resin at all and for the most part I'm really pleased with how it turned out! The inside of the bowl really does glow like movie special effects gold in the light! If I had to do it again, I'd use higher-quality rhinestones, though."

He says, "I have made a magazine rack, mainly for the restroom. Since that's where we do most of our reading. From the As-Is department, I purchased a Vika Lerberg Trestle, some hanging trays/holders (I don't know the name of this product), and some rods. Also I bought a new Dokument pen cup and a Tindra candle.

I drilled holes in the side of the Vika Lerberg. Then I took a hacksaw to the rods for the correct length. After a new paint job and attaching the Dokument cups, here's our new magazine rack!

Emily was inspired by the Arch Magazine Rack from CB2 and comes up with her version of it.
She says, "I used a Snudda Lazy Susan and 1/8" metal rods from Home Depot. I dug out my trigonometry skills to measure off chords around the lazy Susan, then drilled holes and inserted the bent rods. I bent the rods around the metal pole that supports our deck - I bought an extra rod to practice the bending - it took a couple tries to come up with a repeatable process. The Arch Magazine Rack is 9" in diameter. The Snudda version is 15", and it spins!"

I took a Venny Placemat folded it double, sewed the long side and bottom (by hand as the misses said the fabric is to thick for her machine!). Then I attached the loops side of velcro on the inside, the hooks part on the outside. Now I can slide the netbook in it (without scratching in on the velcro), close it up and stuff it in my 8€ decathlon backpack. Easy, quick and the netbook is well protected against scratches and masked for those with less good intentions."

"Just ten Malma mirrors, some emulsion and a idea for a pattern. Uber cheap. But love the effect. I used Photoshop to create my pattern and work out the layout, but free hand is just as good. 10 Malma mirrors painted white with leftover interior emulsion. I left a 2 cm gap between the frames and using a pencil drew in the pattern I wanted allowing for the gap. Again a tiny amount of left over grey emulsion from a spring decorating freshen-up filled in the pattern and done. I love the impact of the them mounted together and all for under £10!"

"I wanted to share this hack because it's so easy to do and inexpensive as well. I have tons of jewelry and was looking for a simple, pretty way to organize them. This really easy hack consists of a white porcelain 365+ series Drom side plate ($3.99) and the Neglinge candle holder (just 49 cents!). I used clear caulk to glue the two peices together (just a couple drops on the edges of the candle holder is sufficient), and now I have a small jewelry stand that I can hang earrings off of and place jewelry on. This hack can of course be done with any ikea plate (there were so many cool ones I had a hard time choosing...I'll definitely be making more of these with larger plates considering all the jewelry I have) and any Ikea item that can be utilized as a stand."

the enetri unit make over to the chic coffee table

when pinky sent me her hack for the enetri unit, i was so distracted by all the cool stuff (the cameras, the tray!) on her display as well as the chic coffee table. while the enetri never caught my eye, it made me do a double take in here. it never looked so good.


pinky writes, "just saw your amazing website and thought i would send my own ikea project. when I moved to an apartment with much higher ceilings all of my stuff seemed ill-proportioned (plus that enetri shelving is rickety and generally irritating!). this is a media center of sorts courtesy of my (i think) discontinued console with the legs removed and the enetri unit screwed to the top. i took out one of the shelves to fit the electronics and covered the remaining ones with drawer liner. i'm pretty happy with it! oh and the sofas visible are also ikea, recovered with cotton duck and ikea curtain."

On paper, Rhythm Zone is a compelling idea; a simple four-button rhythm game that gives PC gamers the ability to play their own library of songs with support for friends and global leaderboards. How could this possibly be a disaster?
Rhythm Zone opts for a single mode that allows players to jump in and play any of the 20+ included songs, or start importing their own. The songs that come with the game are from different indie artists, most of which you probably won’t know. That’s where your years of song collecting comes into play. The process of importing them into the game is the problem. There is no way to upload more than a single song at a time, which makes uploading full albums a tedious process. What’s more frustrating is that each song takes 10-20 seconds to get “analyzed” and imported to the library.

The time it takes to analyze each song could have been excused if the notes on the highway actually correlated with the music. Instead, notes just drop randomly, albeit in some sort of rhythm that matches the currently selected song, but in no way makes you feel like you are playing the song. Playing on Easy fits each song the most since it follows the basic rhythm. Switch over to expert and the game literally heaves up notes that will leave your fingers in pain.

Every once in a while, an indie game will be released that captures the imaginations of nearly all who play it. It’ll enchant players with a distinct visual style, or an innovative approach to classic gameplay elements, or it’ll win players over with sheer charm. Most importantly, it’ll reaffirm that a high production budget is not what makes a good game. Alien Breed 3: Descent is, unfortunately, not one of these games.
Descent is the third in a trilogy of games resurrecting the 1991 classic Alien Breed, a top-down shooter involving gunning down as many aliens as possible. Alien Breed: Impact and Alien Breed 2: Assault are its precursors, and the storyline picks up where AB2 left off.
The gameplay is simplistic: from an overhead view, the player controls the main character, Theodore J. Conrad, Chief Engineer of the Leopold space vessel, as he navigates his way through the labyrinthine corridors, destroying any aliens he finds. You’ll have access to half a dozen guns, complete with a basic upgrade system, and an assortment of items such as health packs, armor boosters and grenades. The camera can be rotated in small increments for a better view of what’s going on, but because of the cramped nature of such a setting the overhead camera doesn’t seem too intuitive – you’ll find fairly often that you don’t have a great view. It’s not game-breaking by any means, but there are some areas in particular where visibility is too low for comfort. Of course, that could be the point.

If you were one of the many who skipped out on Lost Planet 2 on consoles, and thought about picking it up on the PC, I can tell you that for the most part, the game is unchanged, which, by large, is the main issue with the port.
To summarize Lost Planet 2’s story, the planet of EDF III is going through some drastic changes, changes that have snowy tundras transforming into lavish jungles. Multiple factions are fighting against each other for survival, meaning the Akrid aren’t your main problem this time around, and you will experience the many sides of the story through each faction’s eyes. This setup ensures you never grow to like, or to even know any of the main characters.

I love any excuse to jump back into Pandora with my level 50 Soldier to shoot up some maniacs and skags. In Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution, I faced off against cute Claptraps who were faster than past enemies and traveled in deadly packs. Maybe it’s because I am a girl, but I couldn’t help but adore all of the silly little war outfits the different Claptaps were wearing. Some looked like Rambo with magazine clips strapped across their metal chests, while others wore World War II helmets. But, all of them were hell-bent on seeing me dead. And here I was thinking me and Claptrap were old buddies. I guess times have changed.
Times have indeed changed. The weapon powerhouse, Hyperion Corporation, is at war with the Claptraps who are being lead by Ninja Assassin Claptrap, and you have been chosen to shut those pesky robots up once and for all.

Electronic Arts attends to the oversaturation of the FIFA franchise with FIFA 11. Though, after a dismal outing with their World Cup iteration, FIFA 11 at least puts the series back in the direction of improvement rather than irrelevancy.
In general, FIFA 11 isn’t a huge departure from FIFA 10 or World Cup South Africa. The return of Be A Pro mode (start as a reserve and work to joining the squad), online club play, and the career mode should keep longtime fans sucking at the teat that is FIFA 11. It keeps giving back in terms of replay value, but the improvements aren’t astounding when matched side-by-side to the past incarnations.

Japanese publishers have been singing the “I Wan’na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)” song from The Jungle Book for the past few years and it’s no longer flattering. Instead of borrowing elements and making them their own, the publishers have opted to assimilate and attempt to hide within the Western crowd. Herein lies the problem with Front Mission Evolved: It wants to be so much more than it has been in the past and ends up stalling at the starting line.
As somewhat of an experiment, Front Mission has left its tactical-RPG roots and, instead, Double Helix Games opted to take it down the route of an arcade third-person shooter, which is flawed in almost every area that doesn’t involve the 5-6 minute opening cinematic.
Let’s go ahead and tackle the few elements that stand out above the piles upon piles of garbage that litter Front Mission Evolved. If cardboard medals were handed out to development teams for at least attempting something different, then Double Helix deserves one since it’s refreshing to see a break away from the strategic roots of Front Mission, even if it’s terrible in the long run. So there: Double Helix, rejoice as you have a paper title that doesn’t mean much outside of its “thanks for trying” mantra.

The rest of the time you’re looking for useless things such as misplaced apples, fish, swords, and other useless items which have nothing to do with the current situations.

Me neither, although the RTS from Paradox and Neocore almost had me tempted to open a history book. Paradox used much of Total War’s formula and tweaked it just enough to be accessible, but still contain a ton of strategy elements to make successful strategies feel completely satisfying.
With two separate campaigns, you can play as Richard the Lionheart conquering Jerusalem or Saladin trying to protect it from the crusades. Anyone familiar with King Arthur the Role-playing Wargame will feel right at home. Total War veterans will also feel a sense of familiarity as they can command armies on a grand scale, but the game has been more streamlined and simplified if you will, to let the player get on the battlefield without much downtime.
